At Newstead, we want every child to feel welcome, valued and proud to be part of our school. We believe that our differences make our school a richer place, and that everyone has the right to be treated with kindness, fairness and respect.
Above all, we want every child to know that they belong, and that they are seen, heard and valued as an important member of our school community.
PSHE and RSHE curriculums are well-planned and sequenced, and sit at the heart of the school's personal development offer.

Our curriculum and our books show children people from many different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life, so every child can see themselves and learn about others. We talk openly about fairness, and we teach children to stand up to unkindness and prejudice.
Pupils learn about life in modern Britain, a wide range of cultures and communities, the protected characteristics and fundamental British values…This learning is reinforced through the wider curriculum, assemblies and the texts pupils study

Visits, visitors and community events help children learn first-hand about the wider world and encourage them to be curious about different people and ways of life.
Not every child starts from the same place. We work to remove barriers, adapting lessons, clubs and school life so that every child can join in and do well.
We follow the Equality Act 2010, which protects people from discrimination because of their:

These are called the Protected Characteristics.
Through lessons, assemblies and everyday life in school, we help children understand and respect them in an age-appropriate way.
The school gets to know pupils well and uses this understanding to remove barriers so all groups of pupils achieve well over time.

British Values are woven through everything we do, helping children grow into respectful, responsible and caring members of society.
Democracy: Children have a voice. They vote for our Pupil Parliament and share their ideas through questionnaires and meetings.
The Rule of Law: We learn why rules matter and how they keep us safe, in class, on the playground and in the wider world.
Individual Liberty: Children are supported to make good choices and to have confidence in who they are, including staying safe online.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance: We value different cultures, faiths and beliefs, and we teach children to treat everyone with respect.
